Ángela Cervantes

Backing Vocalist

Ángela Cervantes is a Spanish singer whose artistic path began in Ibiza during the 1980s and 90s, where she grew up surrounded by music in her family’s hotel. Singing with the orchestra that entertained travelers from around the world, she developed an early fascination for storytelling through music, sensing that her journey would one day take her far beyond the island.

In 1999, she moved to Barcelona to pursue formal training in dance, acting, and music. She built a solid vocal foundation through classical and operatic studies with Federico Rey, Pepita Escandell, and Raquel Lojendio, which later supported her exploration of Gospel, Jazz, Latin, and contemporary styles. Her artistic voice was further shaped by mentors such as Deborah J. Carter, who guided her in improvisation and vocal self-production, Carme Canela, with whom she developed phrasing and a deep understanding of the voice as an instrument, and Emmanuel Djob, who expanded her vocal range and expressive depth.

Since beginning her professional career in 2001, Ángela has performed extensively and collaborated with a wide range of artists and productions. She has been part of projects such as Emmanuel Djob’s The Black & White Xperience, Antonio Najarro’s Jazzing Flamenco, and the internationally renowned Brit Floyd, where she performed the iconic solo originally sung by Clare Torry. Alongside these productions, her continuous presence on stages across Spain has been essential in shaping her artistic identity.

In 2012, now based in Madrid, she began developing her own recording projects and exploring repertoire in Spanish. Her first album, En esta orilla de Drexler, featured Jorge Drexler, marking a meaningful milestone in her career. In 2014, she released Recordando a Ella Fitzgerald y Joe Pass with Chema Saiz, deepening her connection to jazz language and phrasing.

In 2016, she released Camino a Santa Clara… Por 50 años más con los Fakires, fulfilling a personal dream by reconnecting with the Cuban songs of her childhood. The album received recognition from Chucho Valdés, who highlighted its authenticity and its dialogue between traditional Cuban music and contemporary expression.

In 2021, after becoming a mother of two during the global pandemic, she released Olas y Arenas, inspired by Sylvia Rexach and created with José E. Cruz and pianist Pepe Rivero. This work marked a turning point in her artistic and personal life.

Today, Ángela Cervantes continues to grow as an artist committed to constant learning and creative exploration. With a voice rich in nuance and emotion, she transforms everyday experience into something poetic and meaningful, offering audiences a musical language rooted in authenticity, sensitivity, and human connection.
